Tips for Judges' Feedback

As you provide feedback, keep in mind:

  • How you phrase your evaluation has an equal or greater impact than the content of your evaluation.

  • Offer feedback that’s objective, respectful, and gentle in tone.

  • Carefully select words that describe your own reaction. Use "I" messages, like “I was confused about...” or “I liked it when...” rather than "you" messages, like “you always...” or “you never....”

  • Use the “sandwich” approach – insert suggestions for improvement or critiques between two positive comments.

  • Focus on specifics– saying that something needs improvement but not giving details on what exactly is lacking or how it might be fixed isn't helpful. Clearly address the issue and offer a suggestion for improvement.

  • If something impressed you, mention it!

  • Try not to repeat a point once you have made it.

  • Conclude your comments on a positive note that helps build self-esteem and self-confidence.
